One of the most overlooked accessories for interiors is the area rug.  When designing a room with few existing furnishings – I ALWAYS recommend starting with the area rug.  Why?  Because then you can choose a rug that you absolutely LOVE without having to compromise on color, pattern, or style.  And when you choose an area rug that you absolutely LOVE – you will keep it forever – moving it from home to home, or even room to room.  I have found that even when clients re-decorate, they start with that cherished rug! The BIG Mistake Often clients believe that they should choose paint colors first – I say choose the wall colors LAST whenever possible.  I have every color of the rainbow in paint – I can match any rug, fabric, or beloved accessory with a paint color. What about Durability? Do NOT be afraid of wool area rugs!!  Many people fear that an “expensive” rug is too delicate for active homes or pets.  A quality wool area rug is extremely durable since it doesn’t “pill” or untwist with wear like a synthetic rug.  Even with very heavy wear issues, many wool rugs can be repaired. This is a very exciting new residential construction project.  A designers dream with a gracious and trusting client whose initial direction was “I want my home to feel like royalty lives here”. We started with an existing house that had been mostly deconstructed on the interior.  There were only partial walls with little to no resemblance of what once stood.   The decision was to raze the entire structure except for one load bearing wall on the inside and about 100 feet of wall on the exterior.  So, essentially this was a new construction project. Of course the initial undertaking was orienting the new structure.  There are beautiful views from high up so the owner decided to rebuild the home higher than the original to capture more of the view and add to the structure’s strong presence as you enter the drive.  We are placing large windows on every elevation to bring in the light and take advantage of the beautiful setting.  Aesthetically my design intention is to create a visually strong and proud exterior with formal European influences then carry that feel through to the interior as well.   The owner has a large collection of beautifully carved stone fireplace surrounds, Read More…

Creating a beautiful interior is so much more than selecting furnishings and objects. A fine interior starts with context, then inspiration or a feeling a client lives best in and craves to come home to. An interior should be not only beautiful but inspiring in such a powerful in a way that it holds us, yet at the same time comforts  and nurtures us. It should keep external stresses at bay and indulge us in what makes us feel our best selves. As an interior designer I am always aware of my surrounding keenly noting  everything from the textures in nature,  the shapes of clouds, the colors and beautiful compositions of fine food or the simplicity of an eggplant. I am continuously aware of what captures my attention and why.  I notice how different shapes and patterns move together or how materials connect. I admire beauty but continuously note how something could have been better designed or a higher quality connection or finish could have been executed. These elements both positive and negative feed my mental library. It is when the basics have been worked out the adventure begins and this library comes into focus.  Just a  look, a feel, Read More…

When we are seeking a medical diagnosis or test results, we call our Doctor. When our home’s air condition fails, we call a reputable Heating & Air-Conditioning Company (HVAC), when we need legal advice, we phone our lawyer. WHY would the interior’s of our homes be any different? “Different”? you may ask. Yes, different because our Interior’s are such an integral part of how we express ourselves and who we are as a person or a family. When we view our homes’ interior in this light, we realize that, of course, we would confer with a professional just as we do for any other important event in our daily lives. PROS AND CONS OF SECURING A PROFESSIONAL INTERIOR DESIGNER A. Can I/we afford an Interior Designer? B. What if the designer wants to do “MY” home in “HIS/HER” taste instead of mine? C. How am I certain that the designer I choose is right for me and how do I best work with them? A. As history repeats itself, it is proven that hiring a professional designer will help you in so many ways. Whatever your project may be from new construction to a small remodeling job, or furnishing a Read More…
